What's involved in installing a dishwasher or over-the-range microwave, what you need in place first, and what our $100 installation includes.
Dishwasher: what needs to be in place
A built-in dishwasher needs three things under the sink: a hot-water supply valve, a drain connection (to the sink drain or garbage disposal), and power — either an outlet or a hard-wired connection. Most standard dishwashers are 24 inches wide, so measure your opening's width, height and depth first.
Dishwasher: how installation works
The old unit is disconnected and slid out, the new one is connected to water, drain and power, leveled, and secured to the counter or cabinets. Then it's run through a short cycle to check for leaks.
Over-the-range microwave: what needs to be in place
An over-the-range microwave hangs under a cabinet above your range and plugs into an outlet inside that cabinet. It also works as the range hood — it can vent outside through a duct or recirculate through a charcoal filter. Most are 30 inches wide to match a standard range.
Over-the-range microwave: how installation works
A mounting plate is fastened to the wall, the microwave is hung on it and bolted to the cabinet above, and it's set up to vent outside or recirculate. It's a two-person job because of the weight.
