Refrigerator buying guide: French door vs. side-by-side vs. top-freezer
How the main refrigerator styles compare on space, price and repairs — and which one fits your Orlando kitchen, rental or garage.
Top-freezer
The classic layout: freezer on top, fridge below. Top-freezer refrigerators are the most affordable, use the least energy for their size and have the fewest parts to go wrong. They're the go-to choice for rentals, garages and tight budgets.
Side-by-side
Fridge on one side, freezer on the other, with narrow doors that need less swing room — handy in galley kitchens. Most have an ice and water dispenser in the door. The trade-off: shelves are narrow, so wide items like pizza boxes and sheet trays can be hard to fit.
French door
Two fridge doors on top and a pull-out freezer drawer below. French door models give you wide shelves at eye level and are the most popular choice for family kitchens. They cost more and have more features (ice makers, water dispensers, door-in-door) that can need repairs over time.
Bottom-freezer
A single fridge door on top and a freezer drawer below. You get the eye-level fresh-food space of a French door model at a lower price, with a single, wider door swing.
Standard depth or counter-depth?
Standard-depth refrigerators stick out a few inches past your counters but hold more. Counter-depth models sit nearly flush for a built-in look, with a little less space inside. Measure your opening's width, height and depth before you shop — our measuring guide walks you through it.
Ice makers and water lines
If a fridge has an ice maker or water dispenser, it needs a water line. Check for a small valve behind your current fridge. If there's no line, the fridge still works — the ice maker just stays off.
Which one should you buy?
Rental, garage or tight budget → top-freezer. Narrow kitchen or doors that can't swing wide → side-by-side. Family kitchen where you want everything at eye level → French door. Every refrigerator we sell is cleaned and tested, and new or open-box models include a 1-year warranty.
