How to measure for a new refrigerator (and make sure it fits through the door)

A 5-minute checklist to measure your fridge space, doorways and door swing before you buy — so delivery day goes smoothly.

1. Measure the opening

Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the space and use the smallest number. Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet above, and the depth from the back wall to the front edge of the counter.

2. Leave breathing room

Refrigerators need air to run efficiently. Leave about 1 inch behind the fridge and a little space above and on each side — check the model's install guide for exact clearances. In Florida heat, a fridge without airflow works harder and runs warmer.

3. Check the door swing

If the fridge sits next to a wall, the door may need extra room to open far enough to pull out the crisper drawers. French-door models need less swing space than single-door models.

4. Measure the path in

Measure every doorway, hallway and turn between your front door and the kitchen. The fridge has to fit through the narrowest point — often with its doors removed. Our crew can remove and reinstall doors on delivery.

Common sizes

Top-freezer: about 28–33 inches wide. Side-by-side: about 33–36 inches. French-door: about 30–36 inches, with 36 the most common. Counter-depth models are shallower (roughly 24–25 inches of box depth) and sit flush with cabinets. Each listing on our site shows the model number so you can check the exact dimensions.
