Washer and dryer buying guide: top-load vs. front-load, gas vs. electric
How to pick the right washer and dryer for your home, rental or Airbnb — capacity, top-load or front-load, gas or electric, and stacking.
Top-load or front-load?
Top-load washers are easy to load without bending and are forgiving if someone forgets to leave the door open. Front-load washers use less water, spin more water out (so drying is faster) and can be stacked to save floor space. In humid Florida weather, leave a front-loader's door open between loads to prevent odors.
Electric or gas dryer?
Check your laundry hookup before you buy. Most Central Florida homes and apartments have a 240-volt electric dryer outlet; some have a gas line. An electric dryer needs the right outlet (usually 3- or 4-prong — make sure your cord matches). A gas dryer needs a gas connection plus a standard outlet. Both need a clear vent to the outside.
What capacity do you need?
About 3.5–4.5 cubic feet is enough for most households. Large families, or rentals that do lots of linens, benefit from 4.5 cubic feet and up. Match the dryer to the washer — a dryer roughly twice the washer's capacity dries loads in one go.
Buying a matched set
Matched washer-and-dryer sets look tidy, stack together if they're front-load, and are delivered and hooked up in one trip. They're the easiest choice for furnishing a rental or Airbnb.
Delivery and hookup
Our crew delivers, connects and tests your washer and dryer, and can haul away the old ones for $30 per appliance. Ask us about a new dryer cord or hoses if yours are old.
