How to check a used appliance before you buy it
A simple checklist for buying a used refrigerator, washer, dryer or range — what to look at, what to ask, and what warranty to expect.
Ask how it was tested
A good used appliance seller runs every unit through full cycles before selling it — a fridge should hold temperature, a washer should fill, agitate, drain and spin, a dryer should heat, and every burner on a range should light or heat up. Ask what was tested and whether any parts were replaced.
Ask about the warranty
Private sellers usually sell as-is. A store should give you a written warranty. At Fast Appliances, used appliances include a 3-month warranty (repair or exchange), and you can add a 1-year protection plan.
Look at the details
Check door gaskets for tears (a torn fridge gasket wastes energy), look inside washers for rust or residue, and check that dryer lint screens and vents are clean. Ask for the model number so you can look up its size and features.
Check that it fits
Measure the space, the doorways and any tight turns on the way in. Know your hookups too: electric or gas dryer, 240-volt range outlet, and whether a fridge with an ice maker has a water line available.
Ask about delivery and install
Moving an appliance yourself risks damage. Ask whether delivery, hookup and haul-away of your old appliance are available and what they cost. We deliver next day across Central Florida from $50, hook up washers and dryers, and haul away your old unit for $30.
See it before you pay
Visit the showroom or ask for photos and a video of the exact unit. Every listing on our website shows photos of the actual appliance, and you can text (407) 519-0515 for a video.
