Gas vs. electric range: which is right for your kitchen?

How gas, electric coil, smooth-top and induction ranges compare — and how to check what your kitchen is set up for.

Start with your hookup

Look behind your current range. A large 240-volt outlet means electric. A gas pipe with a shut-off valve means gas (gas ranges still plug into a regular outlet for the clock and igniters). Most homes in Central Florida are wired for electric ranges.

Electric smooth-top and coil

Smooth glass tops are easy to wipe clean and look modern. Coil tops are the most affordable and the easiest to repair — a good fit for rentals.

Gas

Gas burners give instant, visible heat control that many cooks prefer. You'll need a gas line, and installation should be done by a qualified installer.

Induction

Induction ranges heat the pan directly using magnetism. They're fast and precise, and the cooktop stays cooler. You'll need cookware that a magnet sticks to.

Size

Standard freestanding ranges are 30 inches wide. Measure your opening and check whether you need a freestanding (finished sides) or slide-in (sits between cabinets) model.
